Give the Gift of Life!

As we celebrate Valentine’s Day, did you know that February 14th is also National Donor Day?  It’s more than a coincidence that a day set aside for matters of the heart has a connection to organ donation.  There are well over 2,000 heart transplants a year with over 3,500 people on a wait list.  If you add in all the people on the wait list for kidney, liver and other transplants, it’s way more than 100,000 people waiting for our help right now.  How can you help?  Commit to being an organ donor.

To get on the Arkansas registry, you can sign up on-line at ARORA (Arkansas Regional Organ Recovery Agency) or go directly to www.donatelifearkansas.org.  Or, if you drive, the next time you’re at the Revenue office to renew your driver’s license, say yes to organ donation and it will be noted on your driver’s license.   And guess what?  You’re never too old to donate.  The oldest person to date who donated was 94 years old!

It is important to understand that the Donor Registry list is considered to be legally binding.  If you are a registered donor, ARORA (Arkansas Regional Organ Recovery Agency) is NOT required to ask your living next of kin to give final consent for  donation, so it is very important that you share your decision with family members.  Commit to being an organ donor - you alone can save up to 8 lives through organ donation and that doesn’t even include tissue donation.  There’s a whole lot of people out there counting on us!

Please act now and give hope, and the gift of life to someone in need of an organ or tissue transplant.  This is your chance to do something really great!

Safety Topic of the Month - Sexual Harrassment

Sexual Harrassment accusations have been in the headlines a lot lately.  All the more reason to make this our Safety Topic of the Month for March.  To follow are a few things to note:

Sexual Harassment harms us all.  The most important part of our corporate values is to ensure all employees are treated with respect and dignity.  Engaging in, condoning or not reporting sexual harassment are in direct conflict with DOW’S values.

In a nutshell, the definition of Sexual Harassment is..........

  • Unwelcome sexual advances

  • Requests for sexual favors

  • Other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that affects an individuals’ employment, unreasonably interferes with his/her work performance,  or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment.

Please do your part………..Thank you!

DOW - A Difference in the Community

Dow Building Services in Hot Springs had the “distinct honor” of performing clean up duties to the sanctuary of Visitors Chapel AME Church. Reggie Cowan, Hot Springs Area Manager, said in the press release, “It was an honor, since this building is on the National Register of Historic Places.”

The church was recently replastered and repainted and the pews and carpet were covered in sawdust and debris. “We were asked to quote a price for clean up and the pastor called me Wednesday morning with questions. His board would meet that evening, and how soon could we start if we were awarded the job. Later in the day, he called and asked how soon could we start?”

“The sanctuary had not been in use for weeks and was there any way we could get the work done so they could hold service on Mother’s Day? I told him I would try my best and we would start in the morning. When we finished the job, I was proud of how well it cleaned up and proud of the hard work my team did,” Cowan continued.

“I asked for volunteers and I want to thank each one who helped meet the deadline. They were David Roark, Andrew Klich, David Silverman, Jim Dampier, Lisa Stevens and Heather Martin.”

“When the pastor came in after the work was completed, he was elated and said, ‘Praise the Lord.’ He threw his arms around my shoulders and we both hugged and he told me how much he appreciated us going the extra mile to get the sanctuary ready for Sunday service. I told him it was our pleasure.”
